Palm has released their latest financial figures. Sifting through the financialspeak, it looks like Palm is doing quite well in terms of sales. Over the past quarter, they sold a total of 968,000 smartphones and made US$296.2 million in revenue. However, they are still not making a profit at this point.

Things are really heating up now in the mobile OS wars. On July 11th, we will see the formal launch of version 2.0 of the iPhone OS. Yesterday, Google announced that their Android operating system, which was expected to arrive in the second half of this year, may be delayed further. And now, the other big player in the mobile OS space, Symbian, has been bought over by majority shareholder Nokia.

Finally, some good news for Palm. The latest report from IDC shows that Palm had a 13.4% share of the smartphone market for the first quarter of this year, up from 7.9% in the previous quarter. This is still behind Apple’s 19.2%.

The new Centro smartphone has proven to be a winner for Palm. The low-cost smartphone has help Palm boost their sales to 833,000 units and US$275.4 million revenue in the last quarter. However, since the margins are lower for the Centro, Palm still made a loss of US$31.5 million during the same period.
