The GSM (AT&T) version of the Palm Centro has been out for a few days. As a smartphone, it’s cheap and cheerful : nothing new, nothing outstanding, but a real value for money. Here is a roundup of the latest review for the Centro.

Right on schedule as rumoured, Palm and AT&T announced the availability of the Centro smartphone. You can have the white version now and the black version will be available next month. I like the white, but the green buttons make me think twice about it. You can get the Centro from AT&T for US$99, with a 2 year contract.

What’s the best Palm OS smartphone today? Based on the few days hands-on experience I had a few months ago, I would have to say it’s the Centro. The Centro is basically a Treo 680 with a better camera, a different external storage option (micro SD instead of regular SD), all in a smaller, more pocketable form factor. In my opinion the smaller keyboard and screen are very usable. What’s even better is the Centro does not have the lag / performance issues plaguing the Treo 680 and 700p.

Palm has released an update for Versamail to address support for Gmail’s IMAP feature. While Versamail supports IMAP, Gmail apparently addresses IMAP differently enough from other services that it doesn’t work out of the box.
