Palm’s Centro smartphone has been a great success for the company, with over one million units sold. If you are a Verizon subscriber, great news — the Centro is now available for you. Running on Verizon’s high speed EVDO network, the Centro will maintain its low price of US$100 (after rebates) with a 2 year contract.

While we (im)patiently wait for the next Windows Mobile Treo from Palm, the Centro has been making waves in the US thanks to its low price. The Centro has also been released in several countries, including Columbia, Mexico, Singapore and Malaysia. Unfortunately, without telco subsidies, Palm cannot keep its low price out of the US. In Malaysia, the Centro retails for RM1400 (US$450), only slightly less than its older brother Treo 680.

There is no doubt that the Palm Centro smartphone is a success. True, it is hampered by a decade-old operating system. However, the combination of a good form factor, plus a very low price (US$100, or in some cases even free), has allowed Palm and its operator partners to push the Centro to new smartphone customers.

The new Centro smartphone has proven to be a winner for Palm. The low-cost smartphone has help Palm boost their sales to 833,000 units and US$275.4 million revenue in the last quarter. However, since the margins are lower for the Centro, Palm still made a loss of US$31.5 million during the same period.
