2009 Summer of smartphones
We’re just two weeks away from the hottest summer ever … if you’re waiting for smartphones, that is. All the big (and big-wannabe) mobile players are releasing new smartphones within days or weeks of each other in June. Which one will you get?
We start at the beginning of June, when Nokia will release their new flagship “multimedia computer”, the Nokia N97. The all-singing, all-dancing N97 (3G, 32GB memory) will be priced around US$600-700. Look for the N97 on June 2 in North America.
Palm’s all-or-nothing smartphone, the Palm Pre is expected to arrive just before Apple’s Worldwide Developer conference (WWDC). That puts it in the first week of June, and before June 8. The Palm Pre is a touchscreen EVDO phone running the shiny new webOS.
After the Palm Pre, the most anticipated phone is the (still) rumoured next generation iPhone. WWDC is on June 8. Apple’s team will probably talk about their new Mac OS X “Snow Leopard” operating system and tease us with a brand new iPhone at the end. I want a new iPhone.
Google will not take a back seat this summer. The Android operating system will be on a few (shipping) smartphones, including the Samsung i7500, several Motorola phones, and maybe even Acer.
The other player in mobile operating systems, will also join the game, with Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.5 dropping in the summer and possibly shipping in the fall.
Are you feeling the heat yet? Don’t answer if you’re in Australia
