Look, we have a (Chinese) New Year present from Apple! Apple has released a new software update for the iPhone (2G and 3G) and iPod touch. Version 2.2.1 for the iPhone has the usual bug fixes and improvements, including improved stability for Safari, and a fix for an issue where some images saved from Mail didn’t display correctly in the Camera Roll.

2008 was indeed a great year for Apple. They broke many of their own records, and managed to sustain good financial performance even as the rest of the market went to the gutter. Apple sold 13.7 million iPhones in 2008, beating their own 10 million estimate. The App Store, which was introduced half a year ago, now has 15,000 applications (yes, most of them are flashlights and calculators). Application download numbers are also staggering : 500 million. Even if we discount multiple downloads (new versions, etc) it’s still quite a significant figure.

With CES a week behind us, Palm is still receiving good coverage on the new Palm webOS operating system and Palm Pre smartphone. For the moment, at least, Palm has been transformed in the media from a has-been to a comeback kid and a contender. We’ve even heard reports that Palm could sell 1.5 million of these babies in the first year.

I think if there’s a company that I’d love to see win, it’s Palm. It’s been a long journey for me personally with Palm, going back 10 years. They’ve lost their way in the past few years, so the Palm Pre smartphone and new webOS marks a comeback for them.
