The Ant King: and Other Stories

I’m on an ebook kick right now, thanks to eReader Pro on my iPhone. Most people would already know about the availability of public domain ebooks from sources such as Project Gutenberg and ManyBooks.net. Public domain books are usually “old” books, i.e. their copyright has expired. What’s encouraging is that more current authors and publishers are willing to give away ebooks for free in order to promote new books and paper books. Here are a few sources for free commercial ebooks.

eReader is having a promotion right now, to celebrate the release of eReader Pro 1.2 for the iPhone. They are giving away 3 ebooks from publisher Harlequin Romance. If romance is your cup of tea, then grab these ebooks before 12th September 2008. These 3 ebooks are in eReader format, or course.

Night Shade Books has a number of ebooks for free. These range from novellas and short stories to full length novels like Butcher Bird by Richard Kadrey and Grey by Jon Armstrong. These ebooks are available in a few different formats including Mobipocket.

Small Beer Press is offering The Ant King and Other Stories by Benjamin Rosenbaum as well as other ebooks from Maureen F. McHugh, John Kessel, and Kelly Link.

Some authors offer their ebooks directly from their own websites. Jeffrey A. Carver has the first two books in his Chaos Chronicles series in a variety of formats, including eReader and LIT. Don’t forget Cory Doctorow’s ebooks are all freely downloadable at craphound.com.

I hope that fills your virtual bookshelves for the next few months!
