Convert text files to Palm Doc format for eReader on iPhone
One of the best features of the eReader Pro software for the iPhone (and iPod touch), is the ability to store and download your own content. For example, once you are a member of Fictionwise, you can upload up to 25MB of what they call Personal Content. For the moment, there are only 2 types of files supported, the eReader format and the Palm DOC format.
This is going back to the basics a bit, but the Palm DOC format was the original document format for Palm OS devices. Note that the Palm DOC format is not the same as the Microsoft Word doc format. It’s not that easy to find updated file converters for this format nowadays. Luckily, there’s an online service that will help. The MakeDOC Online service by iconv.com will let us upload text files and convert them to Palm DOC (.pdb) files.
It’s a no-frills service. It will compress your files and let you add a title — that’s it. For a free service, it’s not bad. Once you have your Palm DOC files, you can log in to your Fictionwise account and upload the files to your Personal Content area.
Once that’s done, you can download these files directly to your iPhone or iPod touch.
Another option to convert files to eReader format is to use eBook Studio from eReader. It’s available for both Mac and Windows, however it costs US$30.
