True to their word, the good folks at Fictionwise have released an update to their ebook reader for the iPhone. Version 1.1 of eReader brings a few welcome improvements.

The first improvement is the ability to add your personal ebooks. With version 1, you could only add ebooks from your eReader or Fictionwise account. In the new version, you can download other ebooks from any server.

One supported service is manybooks.net, which has a large selection of free ebooks (including in eReader format). If you have your own content which you want to upload (for example some technical documentation, your own stories, etc), Fictionwise caters for that too. There are a couple of options. You could put your eReader format ebooks on any web server (including local servers, for example you could have a web server on your PC or Mac).

Alternatively, Fictionwise will be allowing you to put up your own ebooks and content on their servers. Each Fictionwise or eReader member can have up to 25MB of space. This is sufficient for about 50 novel-sized ebooks. The Personal Content service is free.

Other notable improvements in eReader 1.1 include the ability to lock your reading orientation, tapping instead of swiping to change pages (a feature in my personal wish list) and several sorting options (title, author, date).

In summary, the eReader update addresses many shortcomings of the previous version. Run, don’t walk, to your App Store to get the update if you love ebooks on your iPhone.
