What a day it’s been so far, and it’s not over yet. The Internet is full of chatter about the new iPhone 3G and related services which are being launched today. Not only is Apple releasing the iPhone 3G is 20 countries, it is also:
- releasing the iPhone 2.0 firmware update for previous model iPhones
- launching MobileMe
- launching the App Store (in many more countries)
So how are things going so far?

Ultra Games Bundle Go Green for the Apple iPod touch and iPhone

Frankly, it’s not looking good. In the UK, O2 had the foresight to do a preorder for the iPhone 3G. They promptly sold out of the 16GB version, then their website crashed. With so many new iPhones being activated and upgraded, Apple’s activation servers are being hammered from all over the world. If you own an iPhone and have downloaded the iPhone 2.0 firmware update, please don’t upgrade straight away, wait a day or two.

In the meantime, MobileMe, Apple’s “Exchange for the rest of us” service has been officially launched, however the service has been up and down. As of this writing, the .mac website has this announcement : “The MobileMe transition is underway but is taking longer than expected. While core services such as desktop mail, iDisk and sync are available, the new MobileMe web applications are not yet online.”

The App Store seems to be the least affected. I can browse, purchase and download apps to my iBook with no issues. The downloads seem pretty quick since most of the applications are under 1MB in size.

Apple has definitely taken a hit in reputation today. I hope they manage to resolve their issues in time, before it becomes a public relations nightmare.
