iPhone going solo

March 1, 2008 – 12:56 pm | by Azizi

I just returned from a two-day, 800km business trip. I made a concious choice of leaving my Treo 680 behind, and just bringing my iPhone. I have to say that while I am pleasantly surprised on how well the iPhone performed, I did miss my Treo 680 for a few reasons.

I’ve written at length on the iPhone’s Safari browser before. I have to reiterate, Safari really rocks the mobile web. I used Safari constantly, from checking out Facebook, catching up on RSS feeds via Google Reader, to using the corporate email (using Outlook Web Access). Even in the highways, where only GPRS was available, Safari was surprisingly usable.

The iPhone doubled as a media device, keeping me entertained with TV shows, podcasts and of course music.

The two things that I miss from my Treo 680, are Memos and ebooks. I have not yet managed to sync my 1000+ Memos from my Treo to the iPhone. Without a decent on-board search mechanism (or categorization), it would not be practical anyway. When my wife called me to find out a bank account number, I had no access to that information. It would have taken 5 seconds to find and SMS the message to my wife on the Treo 680. I really miss Mobipocket; there’s a decent ebook reader for the iPhone but it’s not easy to get books on the device.

Overall, about 6 weeks on, I’m really buying into the iPhone experience.

Without Memos and a decent way to store and recall stored information, the iPhone is basically useless as a “Peripheral Brain”.
I still view it as a “feature phone” and it’s not a true smartphone. Pretty useless for professionals.
