Is that an iPhone in my pocket?
It’s no secret that I’m not too happy with the performance of my Palm Treo 680 smartphone. Compared to the Treo 650, and the (where are you) GSM Centro, the system lags were unbearable. Every day there are a few instances when the Treo 680 would just freeze up — I would have to wait up to a couple of minutes before it would return to whatever it was doing.
Sometimes, I’d give up waiting for it to “settle down” and just immediately reset the Treo. Yes, that involves taking out the battery for the Treo 680 — there is no reset button. Yesterday was a particularly bad day for my Treo 680. It would freeze upon an incoming call; I couldn’t answer the call at all and had to reset.
So, this is the beginning of the end for my Treo 680. I have only had my Treo 680 for 4 months but they have been fairly frustrating after 3 years of (almost) trouble-free Treo 650 experience. Last night, I reluctantly forked over some hard-earned cash for a brand new, unlocked & jailbroken Apple iPhone.
The experience with the iPhone has been great so far. Since I sync my Treo 680 with my work (Windows) notebook, it took some tinkering to get my data over to the iPhone. Basically I exported out my Contacts and Date Book from Palm Desktop, copied the files to my iBook, then imported them into Address Book and iCal. That’s almost 2 thousand contacts and about seven years worth of events, meetings and birthdays. From there, synchronizing with the iPhone was quite a painless experience. I now have several gigs of music, audio files, video podcasts and photos on the iPhone.
I still have not figured out how to transfer my 1,000+ Memos to the iPhone, but that’s a story for another day. As of now, the iPhone is my secondary phone (replacing my backup Nokia 1100, which will go to my daughter) and the Treo 680 is still my primary phone, albeit on a transition basis.
