How to convert MP3 into a ringtone on Treo 680

January 20, 2008 – 6:48 am | by Azizi

Palm Treo 680 - Palm OS 5.4.9 - PXA270 312 MHz TFT ( 320 x 320 ) - camera - IrDA, Bluetooth - GSM 850/900/1800/1900 - crimson red

One of the new features of the recent firmware updates for the Palm Treo 680 smartphone is the ability to use MP3 files as ringtones. As Palm puts it : “MP3 and other sound files purchased from the web or sent from friends can now be set as ringtones and alerts.” The thing is, Palm never really explained how all this works. Fortunately, we now know how to do it.

To install an MP3 ringtone follow these simple steps:
1) Launch Blazer / Web Browser
2) Select “Go”=>”Open File” from the menu
3) Pick your MP3 file. Type file:///audio/xxx.mp3 where xxx is the name of your MP3. Note that there are 3 forward slashes after “file:” . Tap “OK”
4) Select “Copy to Ringtone”
5) Your MP3 becomes available among other ringtones.

There you go. Not easy, but at least it’s free. The method should support a few other formats other than MP3, including AAC, AAC+, MIDI, WAV, and AMR.

I still cannot get an mp3 to convert to a ringtone on my 680. I followed these directions to a T. When my phone has Blazer open and I select go, I do not see “open file”. I wonder if this is why I cannot get this to work? I tried to download the update linked to this page and it said my phone was up to date. Any thoughts? Thanks, -Barron
