iPod touch gets closer to a PDA
Now that we’re done salivating over the oh-so-thin but impractical, underpowered and pricey MacBook Air, let’s step back and think about what this year’s Macworld Keynote brought us. There were very few major announcements. Other than the MacBook Air, we had a revision of Apple TV, iTunes Movie Rentals, a wireless backup solution, and software updates for the iPhone and iPod touch.
The iPhone finally gets the capability to send SMS to multiple recipients. Still no sign of MMS, though. The iPod touch, however, got a little bit more interesting. It now has the five additional applications that were available on the iPhone but absent from the touch, including the biggies Mail and Notes. This brings the iPod touch much closer in terms of functionality to what we think a PDA (personal Digital Assistant). The iPod touch will do a decent job as a personal organizer, (Calendar & Notes) and of course email and web access as well.
I was disappointed that there was hardly any mention of the iPhone SDK, other than the fact that it will come out in “late February”. Hopefully that will merit its own event.
