Confirmed : firmware update for unlocked Treo 680 coming
This is straight from the horse’s mouth. Alongside the announcement for the AT&T Treo 680 update today, Palm has promised a firmware update for unlocked, unbranded Treo 680 smartphones as well. According to the Palm Blog : “The unlocked GSM Treo 680 software update will be available soon. Palm is offering a service that will send registered users an email informing them when the update is available. To register, go to http://palm.com/680update and sign up.”
This is definitely good news for “rest of world” users with unlocked, unbranded GSM Treo 680 units. It’s been over a year since the Treo 680 was first launched; it’s way too long to get by without an update.
In the meantime, I took the plunge and updated my unlocked, AT&T branded Treo 680. I am happy to confirm that the phone remains unlocked after the 2.11 update. So far so good, no crashes. However, I was quite disappointed that the performance is still not great (for example the lag when switching applications), especially compared to the Treo 650 and the Centro.
