M Is for Magic

I have to admit, Neil Gaiman is one of my favourite modern writers. I started following him with The Sandman series in the late 80’s and greatly enjoyed his last collection of short stories (Fragile Things) and his last full-length novel, Anansi Boys. Gaiman’s latest work is M is for Magic, another splendid collection of short stories.

This collection has 11 stories, which are all quirky and thought-provoking. If you have read anything by Gaiman before, you know what to expect, i.e. expect to be surprised. Some of the stories are :

* A teenage boy who has trouble talking to girls finds himself at a rather unusual party.
* A sinister jack-in-the-box haunts the lives of the children who owned it.
* A boy raised in a graveyard makes a discovery and confronts the much more troubling world of the living.
* A stray cat fights a nightly battle to protect his adopted family from a terrible evil.

I like reading short stories on the Treo — it’s quite satisfying to be able to finish a story in one sitting, rather than in bits and pieces as I always do with a full-length book. I am halfway through M is for Magic, and I can highly recommend it.
