Run your Palm OS applications on Linux
With Google’s Android on the horizon, our old pal ACCESS (formerly PalmSource) needs to get its act together fast — at least sign up a few licensees for its Linux-based operating system. ACCESS apparently has been working hard to release some software. It comes to a surprise that their first release is actually targeted for Nokia tablet computer platform.
The beta version of Garnet Virtual Machine from ACCESS is designed to run on the Nokia N series tablets including the N810, N800 and N770. The Virtual Machine comes bundled with the well-known Palm PIM applications ( Address, Date Book, Memo Pad) and supports popular 3rd party applications such as Google Maps, Snappermail, Pocket Tunes, Kinoma Player, DateBk5, Bejeweled and more.
If you have been wishing for a new PDA, the Nokia N800 is a reasonable $400 — plus it can now run your Palm apps!
ACCESS is releasing the Garnet Virtual Machine for free, and is building a database of compatible applications with user feedback. So if you have a Nokia N810/800/770, go ahead and download it.
The Nokia tablets run a version of Linux as well. I wonder if ACCESS is planning to release the GVM for other Linux platforms as well … perhaps a version for Android could be possible?
