There have been rumour after rumour about the “Google Phone“. I’m sure you have heard of some of them, including the one about HTC building hundreds of thousands of mobile phones for Google. There was also one about how the Google Phone won’t be an actual phone, but rather an operating system and collection of services for mobiles.

When you think of it, most of Google’s major applications and services are already available for mobile devices. You have mobile versions of most of their web-based services such as Gmail, Google Docs, Google Reader and there are even native or Java clients of Gmail and Google Maps.

This could be an opportunity for Palm. Since Palm is a long way away from introducing smartphones based on their new Linux platform, they should work with Google to beef up their current offerings in the meantime.

I like the idea of a dedicated Google client for Palm, with Search, Reader, Mail, Calendar, Docs and Maps built in. The Google client could feature integration with the Palm PIM applications like Calendar, Memos, Tasks and Contacts. Palm could even make use their AddIt technology, which can update applications on your Treo. If you want to see this in action, look for the MyTreo application.

Do you think that a Google-Palm combo would make sense?
