Looks like we’re stuck with Palm OS Garnet 5.4.9 for at least another year. While Palm has said that the development of their new, Linux-based OS is progressing “as well as possibly could be expected”, it’s still not fast enough to get the OS out for new devices any time soon.

What does this mean to Palm users? For one, most likely we’ll see no dramatic new functionality or user interface improvements. Garnet to date has not been able to support 3G or WiFi simultaneously with GSM. We will also probably see Palm introduce more new Windows Mobile devices.

By the time Palm OS 2 comes up, will there still be a Palm? Hopefully the new devices such as the Treo 500v and the Centro can bring Palm enough revenue in the meantime.
