Ebook recommendation : Spook Country by William Gibson
Spook Country is the latest work by William Gibson, the science fiction writer most popularly known for Neuromancer. If you’re expecting hard science fiction, then you would be disappointed. Spook Country is some sort of a sequel to Gibson’s previous book, Pattern Recognition. Instead of the future, this book is about the recent past.
Spook Country is a roller coaster ride, mostly because you don’t know where you’re going to end up. Set in 2006 (that’s right, last year), Spook Country tells the story of Hollis Henry, former indie rock star turned investigative journalist as she follows the trail of a new cyberspace-inspired art form. Things get complicated as many new characters are introduced, such as a drug addict who is an expert in obscure languages (who is abducted by someone who may or may not work for a government security agency), a young ethnic Chinese Cuban who is trained by former KGB agents, a troubleshooter for manufacturers of military navigation equipment and more.
As Cory Doctorow says, the last 70 pages of this book are really riveting, and I really didn’t know how the book was going to end. Definitely a book that gets you thinking.
