Enter the … Google Phone?
What is the Google Phone? Like the Apple iPhone (before it was finally unveiled in January), the Google Phone is another device that takes on mythical proportions. People expect a lot from Google, and the Google Phone is another “saviour phone” that will solve our communications problems, make us look cooler and will cost no more than US$100.
In reality, there’s not much information available, other than rumours. Lately there’s been increased speculation about the Google Phone, mostly due to Google’s expected bid for the 700MHz spectrum auction in the US.
Just yesterday Scott Kirsner of The Boston Globe increased the speculation up a notch, claiming that a Google executive has showed off a prototype Google Phone.
Om Malik discusses 5 facts about the Google Phone (although since the phone is as yet unconfirmed, we can’t really call them “facts”). The Google Phone apparently is powered by a variant of Linux, can run Java applets, has a Java-based browser, and has a built-in QWERTY keyboard ala the Treo.
The Google Phone, if it exists, poses yet another threat to Palm. The smartphone world has started to become very competitive and extremely interesting.
