Hello, Palm Centro
August 18, 2007 – 7:32 pm | by AziziPalm Gandolf, or the Treo 800, is not what it seems. Palm is apparently planning to release a new range of low-end smartphones under the “Centro” brand. Palm shared a few details at the recent Sprint Tech Summit held in Reston, Virginia.
Here’s what we know so far:
* Smallest Palm OS smartphone to date
* Targeting a younger demographic, new to the smartphone space
* Runs on EVDO network
* New design features a full keyboard and touch screen
The keyboard, as we have observed earlier, is very cramped. I feel that Palm should have put a bit more thought into the design. Low end doesn’t mean creating a cut-rate version of existing services. The one thing that Palm definitely got right with this phone is the price point : US$99 with subsidies. At $99, Palm could use this as a replacement for their entry-level PDA the Z22.
By branding the new phones as Centro, Palm can continue to improve and upgrade the Treo series — remember when we had Tungsten and Zire lines of PDAs?
