As promised, PalmInfocenter has released their short video of the Palm Treo 800p smartphone. In just a few hours, Palm has managed to get YouTube to take down the video, citing “copyright violations”.  I did manage to view the video before it was blocked, and it does look like a real device.  Palm’s action probably confirms that it’s a sure thing.

What we know so far:

  • This version of Treo 800p runs Palm OS Garnet
  • It’s a GSM phone (probably not 3G)
  • It has a touch screen
  • Smaller battery : 1150 mAh
  • MicroSD card slot

I still say the design leaves much to be desired. If it’s a low-end phone, then usability would be really important, so the keyboard needs to be spot-on.  Hopefully Palm can reach the right price points, for example US$200 without subsidy.  Otherwise, it’s difficult to see how the Treo 800p could succeed in such a crowded market.
