Palm Treo vs Apple iPhone

Andrew over at Treonauts chimes in with his opinion of the new Apple iPhone.  I share his disappointment in Palm’s lack of response to the iPhone, despite having an entire six month notice.  Incidently, this is one of the rare times that Apple has preannounced such an important product.  Did Palm throw away its chance of mounting a credible competitor to the iPhone?

Understandably,  Palm has had a fairly turbulent year, with uncertainty on future direction and constant speculation on whether they would be acquired.  However, Palm’s failure to do anything significant in the meantime, is totally unforgivable.  I have mentioned before that there are many things that Palm could have done, at least to make the current customer base feel a bit better about their $400-600 investment in the Treo (and accessories, of course).  But they managed the Treo 700p firmware update badly, and they made very few updates or improvements to their existing products.
If you have spent any time at all in the Palm-related forums, you’d have come across the following statement :

“I love the Treo, but I wish I could have it in a TX form factor”.  i.e. with no hardware keyboard, but with a 320×480 screen.  Does that device sound familiar?

As a Palm loyalist, of course I’m rooting for them.  Will they deliver for us, the loyal Palm addict?
