Palm has just released a new ROM update for the AT&T (formerly Cingular) version of the Palm Treo 680 smartphone. Considering that the Treo 680 was released only a few months ago, this is quite a fast turnaround for Palm. Treo 700p users have been waiting for their updates for over a year now.

Well, no one knows exactly what is Jeff Hawkins’ new product, or even what the code name is, but the team over at Brighthand sure had a good time speculating. The Palm “Hawk” is their unofficial codename for the previously announced “third device line” coming from Palm, which will neither be a Treo nor a classic PDA.

Who says nothing exciting happens in the Palm world these days? Palm Chief Financial Officer Andrew Brown was due to deliver a presentation at the J.P. Morgan Chase technology conference in Boston yesterday. He cancelled at the last minute, and immediately speculation mounted that a takeover was about to happen (again). Palm’s shares rose as a result — up by 4%!
