Palm OS Map

At Palm Inc’s Analyst Day, CEO Ed Colligan confirmed all the speculation about Palm developing its own OS. Apparently the still-unnamed project has been going on in Palm “for years”, which probably means they never really believed in Palmsource/ACCESS and their ACCESS Linux Platform. Leaving the issue of ALP with no customers, this is great news for Palm and fans.

The new operating system from Palm will have an open-source, Linux-based core and will have aspects of Palm OS Garnet. This new OS will emphasise on Palm’s strengths :

  • outstanding usability
  • great performance
  • easy development

Palm expects to have more new products coming out this year based on the legacy Palm OS and also the new OS.More great coverage on this matter at Palm Addicts, Engadget and PalmInfocenter.

What this means for me personally is, skip the Treo 680, and wait to compare the iPhone and Palm’s new smartphones.
