We don’t hear much about Palm’s plans for future devices — only rumours and more rumours. So it was refreshing to read an article on the New York Times about Palm’s new hire, veteran interface designer Paul Mercer. Mercer has a sterling CV, and is described as having “a knack for designing complex systems in ways that are accessible”. Some career highlights :
- lead designer of Version 7 of the Mac Finder
- founded Pixo, which developed the original iPod user interface
- designed the bestselling Samsung Z5 MP3 player
It’s unclear exactly what project Mercer is working on at Palm. It could be a facelift for the Palm OS, or even the wildcard — designing the user interface for a hybrid Numenta/Palm Treo smartphone. We can dream, right?
