(Mis)understanding Palm

Palm Inc has received a lot of flak lately from the press and the blogosphere (including from me). A lot of it has centered around the fact that Palm is perceived to be slow and unresponsive to the marketplace, and that Palm does not have a good understanding of its competitors. There have been several mis-steps lately, especially with the delay of the Palm Treo 750v in the US. Palm Inc has missed the timeframe when most companies plan their budget for the next calendar year, and some companies may pass on the Treo 750v as a major purchase. Well things are not as bad as they seem, and some issues just have been blown out of proportion.

Access Linux on Treo

Way back in February during the 3GSM conference, Palmsource (now ACCESS) made a big announcement about their new ACCESS Linux Platform (ALP). The next-generation smartphone operating system based on Linux was full of bells and whistles, supposedly able to run Linux, Java and legacy Palm OS applications. Looks like Palm Inc knew something that we didn’t, when they renewed their licence to use and expand the Palm OS just last week.

After making an appearance on the Alltel network, the Palm Treo 700wx smartphone is now available in Venezuela. Palm’s partner for the Treo 700wx in Venezuela is Movistar, which is the leading cellular telephone company with more than 8 million subscribers.
