Access Linux on Treo

Way back in February during the 3GSM conference, Palmsource (now ACCESS) made a big announcement about their new ACCESS Linux Platform (ALP). The next-generation smartphone operating system based on Linux was full of bells and whistles, supposedly able to run Linux, Java and legacy Palm OS applications. Looks like Palm Inc knew something that we didn’t, when they renewed their licence to use and expand the Palm OS just last week.

It turns out that ACCESS won’t have ALP ready by the end of this year, as they previously promised. The release date for ALP has now been pushed back to “first half of 2007″. Even if ALP is launched, we know for sure that Palm won’t be using it — they already have two operating systems for new Treos : the solid and reliable Palm OS for general users and Windows Mobile for their business customers. ACCESS so far has not announced any customers for their ALP. Come to think of it, we haven’t heard much about China Mobile Soft, which Palmsource acquired last year. China Mobile Soft developed software for feature phones i.e. non-smartphones.
