As the year comes to a close, gadget fans look forward to buying (and receiving) new toys during the holiday season. Mac fans look forward to a month later, as Apple traditionally releases new products during the Macworld Conference and Expo in January. Typically, the rumours for new products start a few months earlier. For the past several years, one of the more persistent rumours is regarding the Apple iPhone. There have been many (fake) iPhone images and certainly much speculation. Now Kevin Rose of Digg has revealed some supposedly insider information about the iPhone.

Kevin has been successful in breaking one Apple rumour — he revealed details of the original iPod nano just before it was released. Here’s what we could expect from the Apple iPhone, according to Kevin :
* January launch on “all” providers, both CDMA and GSM
* Extremely small form factor
* Two battery design (with single charger) — one for playing music, the other for phone functions
* Flash memory: 4GB for US$249, 8GB for US$449
* “Slide-out keyboard”
* Possibly touchscreen

Previously, we have heard rumours that Apple has placed orders for 12 million of these iPhones from Foxconn, one of Apple’s existing suppliers. If these rumours do turn out to be true, then Palm for one will certainly be in for an interesting time.

Personally, I will hold off buying the Treo 680 until Macworld. While the Treo 680 would make a nice upgrade to my Treo 650, I wouldn’t mind trying out something different for a change.
