Yesterday, NTP announced that it was suing Palm for patent infringement. NTP claims that Palm infringed on seven of its patents. NTP doesn’t really make any products — the company is probably best known for winning a lawsuit against RIM (maker of Blackberry) for over US$600 million. Today, Palm responded with a strongly-worded statement. According to Palm, all seven of those patents have been rejected as invalid by the US Patent and Trademark Office. Hopefully Palm will prevail.

While I respect everyone’s right to protect and maintain their intellectual property, this shouldn’t be made a business in its own right. Wouldn’t it be marvellous if patents were used to pursue innovation and grow markets instead of lining the pockets of lawyers ?
