More coverage on the Treo 680

Treocentral has a hands-on report on the Treo 680. Some details :
- the 680 has a “better-performing” GSM and EDGE radio
- it has 64MB user memory and 64MB program memory
- there’s a new Phone application with an integrated Contacts screen
- the bundled software is the same as the Treo 700p. This is a surprise for me, as I expected that as a consumer phone it would have a different software mix (maybe more games/multimedia and less work stuff like Documents To Go).
It’s good to note that Palm, Inc has taken the task to extend and enhance the ageing Palm OS for its line of smartphones. The Treo 680 runs Palm OS 5.4.9 (will we ever see a 5.5?) and has some new features which should make the 680 even easier to use. Palm should follow Apple’s lead and release firmware updates for older Treos that brings them up to par with the new ones. However, with all the different versions of the Treo 650, this is an understandably complex process.
Engadget has good, large photos of the new devices – you can see the various colours and a comparison with a Sprint Treo 700p.
Finally : Rumours are, at least one US mobile carrier will have the Treo 680 by next month, just in time for the holiday season. That’s great news!
