ACCESS Developer Network from PalmSource
We can safely say goodbye to Palm OS for future generations of Treos – at least from PalmSource. In a pre-LinuxWorld announcement, PalmSource introduced their ACCESS Developer Network, which is a new online resource designed to accelerate the creation, distribution and usage of mobile Linux applications for devices based on the ACCESS Linux Platform (ALP). The goal of the ACCESS Developer Network is to help Linux application developers “go mobile” and provide companies seeking to tap into the rapidly growing worldwide mobile Linux applications market with exclusive access to in-depth technical information and enhanced business development support.
Looks like PalmSource and its parent company, ACCESS, is going full speed ahead with their Linux platform for smartphones. It could be a while yet before we even see the ALP on smartphones, since the ACCESS Developer Network is only expected to launch to the public later in 2006. The success of ALP would depend on the strengths of third party developers as well as the core platform itself.
Expect more details on the ALP at the PalmSource Developer Day (Wednesday, August 16th, Moscone Center) during LinuxWorld.
