This year, I’ve read two older works by science fiction author Neal Stephenson.  They are very different from each other, but both are highly recommended.
Cryptonomicon
Cryptonomicon is a great hacker story, and will be interesting especially if you like cryptography – it’s almost like a textbook within a story.  Spanning a period between World War II and today, it features codemakers and codebreakers, math geniuses, secret conspiracies, a gold fortune, Nazis – and pirates!

The Diamond Age: Or, a Young Lady\'s Illustrated Primer (Bantam Spectra Book)

The Diamond Age is also a hacker/crisis story, but it’s set in the future. The central device in this story is called The Young Lady’s Illustrated Primer, which is actually an ebook device designed to educate a girl. The Primer teaches through stories and games – I sure wish I had one of those when I was growing up!

I’m definitely digging Neal Stephenson. I’ve heard that his new books, especially The Baroque Cycle, are also quite solid.
