Treo 700p versus Motorola Q

Walt Mossberg at the Wall Street Journal takes a look at the new Motorola Q and compares it against the Palm Treo 700p smartphone. The Treo 700p wins hands down, of course. Perhaps a better comparison would have been between the Motorola Q and the Palm Treo 700w, since both use Windows Mobile operating systems (although the Q uses the “smartphone” version and the Treo 700w uses the Pocket PC Phone Edition).

To be fair, the Motorola Q was launched at least six months too late , and Motorola knows it – as reflected in the price. At US$199, the Q is a good choice for those looking for a starter smartphone. Palm should also look at producing an entry-level smartphone at that price point.

The verdict:
“You might like the $199 Motorola Q because of its price tag or striking design. If you don’t use email too much, or if you’ve never used another smartphone, you might not miss the more user-friendly features that the Treo 700p has to offer. We wish that the sleekness of the Motorola Q could be combined with the intuitive features of the Treo 700p. For now, we’ll stick with what works best — the newest Treo.”
