Armed robbery caught using camera phone

While it’s not always safe to stop a crime in progress, now bystanders have another weapon to wield. In the UK, the reports that four men have been found guilty after a £75,000 bank armed robbery when a guard was shot and mobile phone pictures taken by passers-by gave vital clues.

Security guard Roy Grey was dropping off cash at a branch of the Halifax Bank when he was grabbed by two masked men who demanded money. Customers in the bank tried to help Mr Grey but were fought off by the raiders who escaped with three cash boxes containing £25,000 each.

As the drama unfolded, members of the public took pictures on mobile phones, providing vital clues for police.
