Review : Vaja T65 Leather Case for Treo 650

For the past few days, I have been testing the i-volution T65 Leather case for Treo 650 from Vaja. Vaja is a company based in Argentina that specialises in high end cases for PDAs, smartphones, iPods and other devices. Read on for the pictorial review.

Vaja has taken a cue from Apple to create wonderful packaging that you simply want to take your time to open it. The packaging for the T65 leather case reminds me of the new iPod packaging. Inside the package Vaja has included a couple of logo stickers, just like Apple does.

The package opens up like a book to reveal the case and belt clip. The smell of rich, luxurious leather immediately hit me as I opened it up.

Even my cat loves the smell!

The T65 is pretty sturdy and should be able to protect your Treo 650 from most scrapes and bumps. I have full access to all the buttons and ports, including the volume buttons on the left side of the Treo, and the multi-connector port and headset jack at the bottom. A nice touch is the fine metal mesh covering the earpiece in front, as well as the speaker grilles at the back. I detected no reduction in loudness from my alarms (from the speakers) or the sound coming from the earpiece. The LED is covered by a translucent covering that still allows me to see the light as it flashes or changes colour.

This case fits very snugly with my Treo 650. I like the fact that it covers all the scratches and blemishes of my almost 1 year old Treo. Even though the top is left open for easy access to the SD card and infra red port, there’s no danger of the Treo falling out of the case even when shaken. As you can see the screen and keyboard are left exposed (Vaja has another case, the T66, which comes with a flip cover). I can still type as I do normally, but the sometimes it’s hit-and-miss when it comes to keys at the edges of the case.

The quick release belt clip is very easy to use, and keeps my Treo 650 securely locked. The clip is extremely strong, able to resist up to 130 pounds of pressure from any direction. That means it won’t pop off your belt very easily! To insert or unlock/remove the Treo from the belt clip, I have to move it sideways and push on the top button. The clip is designed for both right handed and left handed users.

My T65 case is basic black, but Vaja offers customised versions where you can choose two colours for your case (out of a pallete of 30), your choice of belt clips, and engraving options. The Vaja T65 is priced quite higher than most cases on the market (it starts at US$100), but it’s certainly worth it for the looks and the quality. I would certainly recommend Vaja if you want a case with a touch of class and are willing to spend a bit of money. If you’re on a budget, then I’d advise you to look elsewhere.
