Way back in the day, when I used keyboard-less PDAs (and the writing recognition software Graffitti), writing long documents were difficult. The task was made easier with Shortcuts, a feature of the Palm OS where you could substitute short codes for frequently used words or phrases. For example, I used “mtg” which automatically expanded to “Meeting with:”. In the Treo 650, there’s no such functionality. The Palmdoc Chronicles points us to ShortCut5 by Mark Tamura.

Shortcut5 works with both the Treo 650 and the Treo 600. It allows us to define shortcuts of up to 4096 characters. This is great for longer phrases and even entire paragraphs. For example, here’s what PalmDoc does :

“I define a patient template ‘.pt’ as :

Diagnosis:
Referring:
Medication:
Follow-up: “

Shortcut5 will definitely save you a lot of time. It’s freeware, too!
