Smartphones are all the rage nowadays - in fact, according to a Gartner report, almost 8.5 million were shipped in the first quarter of this year alone. If you compare that to 180 million mobile phones, then the figure is miniscule - but it's growing every day.
The big news is that Linux-based smartphones have surpassed both Palm OS and Windows Mobile for Smartphones combined. Only 380,000 Treo smartphones were shipped as compared to over 1 million Linux-based devices and almost 6.5 million Symbian devices.
Palm already has a great product in the Treo 650, and it should work harder at selling and promoting the device. Otherwise it will remain just a niche player in an ever-growing market.
